Description

Sound Meter Sound Meter is a small but very useful application that allows you to easily and quickly measure the level of ambient noise in decibels, while using exclusively the capabilities of your own gadget, or rather, the built-in microphone, and without bothering with the use of technically complex and expensive devices designed for such purposes.

The application belongs to the category "Tools" and does not impose age restrictions on users, although reliable information about the noise level is unlikely to be appreciated by kids and even teenagers.

What is a sound level meter for?

With the help of such a device, any user can easily and easily determine the level and intensity of ambient noise and timely track its increase to values considered hazardous to human health. As a rule, a high noise level starts at around 85 dB, after which doctors recommend using earplugs or special dense headphones to reduce this level. The optimum noise level for the human ear is not exceeding 45-50 dB. Noise measurements should be taken in the most frequently visited locations such as industrial areas, schools, clinics, subways, etc.

Despite the fact that traditional microphones built into popular gadgets have a number of limitations in terms of the ability to measure the ambient noise level with their help, since such microphones are predominantly configured to pick out a person's voice, it is worth noting the quite satisfactory measurement accuracy of this device , which - however - largely depends on the type and capabilities and settings of the device itself used for the measurement.

The application contains a table of approximate noise sources, thanks to which you can get a general idea of the noise level in various places - in the subway, at a concert, on the street, etc. The information is displayedOn a clear round display, reminiscent of the usual speedometer of most cars, and does not cause any particular difficulties in interpreting the values obtained.

Benefits of a paid app

The program Noise meter has 2 versions - completely free, the capabilities of which are quite enough for a simple layman, and paid, which is distinguished not only by the absence of advertising, but also by the presence of a number of advantages, such as:

  • availability of additional carefully calibrated models that simplify the procedure for measuring the noise level and increase the accuracy of the measurements;
  • the ability to build a graph of sound pressure, which can be used for retrospective analysis, taking into account the principles of moving a smartphone within certain territories;
  • configuring notifications based on signal strength - for example, you can configure a notification that will be triggered if the ambient noise level reaches a user-preset value;
  • saving measurement statistics, maintaining log data;
  • built-in vibrometer.

Great app. Love the grap and time scale the screen shot option is really handy as well

A perfect app if you have sensitive ears

Can't use it while using the microphone for another app. Probably an Andriod limitation but they have no excuse because Windows has allows this for decades, so this is really stupid when you think about it. I'm trying to screen record the app so the recording contains the ambient sound and the app reading

Works well did what we needed. Would like to be Abe to catch the peaks beter

I quite like this app. It's interesting to use when out in traffic, listening to live music etc. I would like there to be a red line showing a danger level though.

Not a lot of control over the basic free version, but good response to noise. Levels vary and are not consistent. The calibration resets itself and I'm not sure how to reset it to proper levels other than to reinstall.

Sound Meter works pretty well. I am unsure of how accurate it is, but as a sound engineer for small indoor concerts and gatherings, it helps me keep the sound to a good volume without peeking too high.

Don't often use it. Nice to measure annoying sounds, jets etc. Hard to find somewhere completely silent for calibration. Wish developer would give suggestions. I assume because I have a higher end phone its probably close.

Very accurate compared to lots of other sound meter apps. I didn't have a physical sound meter to compare to, but I did test it against equipment rated for a decibel range and it was within the range.

Very functional. I compared it against an actual sound meter. I got simular results to the real deal. So therefore, this ap receives high marks. It's worth the effort.
