rif is fun for Reddit

I've used this app since I made the switch to Android several years ago. It has a clean, functional interface that reminds one of the old Reddit UX, with most features included ad-free. Enabling ads gives you access to a few "premium" features, like a layout designed for tablets. When enabled, ads will only appear infrequently as sponsored posts in your feed, so they're about as unobtrusive as possible and easy to ignore.

It's a solid Reddit app. It's quick, has nice features for easy Reddit viewing, has minimal advertising, and doesn't interrupt my day with intrusive notifications. None of which I can say about the official Reddit app. I suppose it could be a bit more intuitive (some functions like creating posts or finding profiles might not be the easiest to find) but doesn't take too long to figure out.

User Name

Been using for years. Deleting it today. I'm not sure why but for the last month at least the app has been super slow, you click on a link and you wait forever. I kept thinking it was my service but I've noticed if you just click "open in browser" the link loads instantly, so it's the app that's bottle necking everything for some reason. I was about to complain to my phone service before I noticed this. It's been a month and hasn't gotten better so I'm assuming it's not going to. Bye.

This is a great, fast alternative to Reddit, but it has a few issues. For starters, the search function on the original app is much better. If you are searching for a sub, you have to spell it perfectly, and it doesn't even show suggested subs. It just brings you directly to the one you searched. The other smaller problem I have with it is that closing comments by holding down on them doesn't work. You have to click on the comment, then close it. Other than that, it's a super speedy alternative.

Update: After going back and forth between this and the Reddit app, the only thing missing on this app is the ability to see profile pictures by the usernames. Also Flair images. Hopefully they can be added. Great app, but has some issues. Doesnt load some links and menus/buttons are inconsistent. Example: Switch Account randomly disappears depending on what page you're on in the app.

At first I wasn't much of a fan, but I've grown to really like the simple design. It's also much more battery efficient than the official app and it doesn't slow down after a few minutes of scrolling. It might not be a feature rich as the official app and "check mail outside app" seems to use more power than the stock app in standby mode, but it is rock solid. Also, kudos for updating the app on the Amazon Appstore as well, not many Reddit clients are and I like using it on my Fire tablet.

This app is generally awesome, but it inconsistently responds to Android 10 gestures. Sometimes it takes multiple swipes up from the bottom to get out of the app and back to the home screen. Other times the back gestures does nothing. It works properly probably 90% of the time and I am unable to discern any pattern to this behavior.

The experience is so much better than the original reddit app however there is no easy way to differentiate between videos, photos, and gifs, inbox notifications take a long time to arrive, and there is no seemingly good way to search for a specific subreddit to which you don't lniw the exact name. But other than that, the app is fantastic. It is super lightweight and much more efficient - best reddit client I have ever used.

I'll start with Apollo on iOS is my gold standard for Reddit apps. With that in mind, RIF is a fairly close second, and certainly my favorite Reddit app on Android. Scrolling is smooth, load times are quick, the lack of ads for the premium version is great, and the media player works well. Wish there were more options for customization, and sometimes pictures load strangely, but otherwise a decent Reddit experience.
