Reviews for Magic: The Gathering Arena
Best way to learn the game at your pace and to do it entirely for free.
Best game I own. Play every day.
The game is quite addicting. You have to spend time to learn the mechanics of the game while strategizing a win comes from trial-and-error. The part that makes it fun for me is the fact I've spent the time to learn mechanics well enough to play my own cards, in my own way, well enough to defeat others who simply use a meta. In my opinion magic the gathering arena's greatest thrill is not giving up and seeing yourself go from a zero to a hero.
I am unable to even play. I've done the tutorial and the color challenge up to where you play against another player but when I try to do the last challenge, it says network event error, try again later. I tried getting help from support but they have not contacted me in a month. My internet connection is good and stable but I can't connect to anyone. Edit: My friend and I were able to find a work around to basically skip the color challenge and that fixed the match making and worked normally.
good fun, needs deck limits and more rewards for playing, extremely grindy and rewards are ok but need way more like i said.
I like it. Itt has been a good substitute for live playing. I rarely get to go play any more. But this has been fun. The only problem I have is sometimes I have to go a small stretch without playing and I am not able to get full value from mastery pass. Needs more xp possibilities, especially as the season winds down.
On one hand, this is my favorite way to play MTG, hands down. Having the computer keep track of everything really cuts down on the mental strain of the game, and being able to play any time means I'm playing more Magic than ever before! On the other hand, the client is god awful. It's laggy, it crashes, it lacks very basic QOL features. The in-app economy also needs serious work. It's downright predatory at it's worst and an insult to users' intelligence at best.
Great game. Only one issue with the game, but if they get resolved I'll give it 5 stars. Building a deck is miserable unless you plan on spending money pn the game. It just takes forever especially for some game formats. Mainly brawl where you need 100 cards and only 1 of each card. It would be an easy fix if they included a way to break cards down into wild cards but who knows if that'll happen.
would be nice if they added commander format
Dreaded "connecting to server" messages in the middle of game play happen much too often.
Recreates the game well, but unfortunately crashes a lot (either freezing mid game or shutting down entirely). You can rejoin games but it takes a while and (humorously) you are penalized with a timer during these crashes so can miss turns or be kicked out of active games without being able to do anything. If they can fix this, it'd be a pretty much perfect MTG app.
Some bugs against AI. It'll make bad decisions like, target it's own cards with damage or lock down abilities kind of bad. UI in the main menu is very unclear about what's what. And deck building feels very slow, at least on the mobile version. A good game, just desperately needs quality of life improvements
Mobile Magic, what could be better? ...But the crashes make this nearly unplayable. Ranked games crash and take over a full minute (after "reverifying the client") to rejoin forcing you to lose a turn or timeout entirely, and in turn losing rank. Wizards, we want to play your game. So please, let us enjoy it.
I love Magic and have been playing for almost the entire time it's been around. Playing drafts and sealed events at whim is amazing. I do wish there was a better way to handle looped interactions though. As for why a 2...the lack of multiplayer game formats, the lack of commander, and the addition of Alchemy prevent me from rating the game higher. The economy in the game is the other reason. You need to be able to break down cards you don't want or even be able to trade somehow.
