The computer RPG follows as a basis elements of classic tabletop strategies like Dungeons & Dragons. Since then, with the release of the first RPGs at the dawn of computer development 20-25 years ago, nothing has changed significantly: RPG follows a proven formula, where the following are the fundamental elements:
- Role system. Within the framework of the concept, the player is given the opportunity to develop a separate, unique group of characters under personal control through a set of experience points, where each of the characters has its own history and motivation.
- The principle of the study of the game world. Fundamental principle: within the game setting, the player is given the opportunity to move freely (limited, often, only by plot twists). As a rule, it is thanks to the exploration of the huge game world that RPG gameplay drags on for long tens of hours, where it is not at all necessary to follow the storyline and reach the final (the so-called free RPG sandbox).
- Emphasis on the plot component. In an RPG, the story plays an important role: through the narrative, it tells how the game world was created, the history of its development, the participation of key villains and main characters in it. Also, through the story, in-game dialogues, tasks, side quests and interaction with NPCs are served.
- Expanded combat system, taking into account the detailed characteristics of the heroes. As a rule, it complements the role-playing system: it explains the effectiveness of characteristics and personal perks in battle through interaction with the characteristics and perks of an enemy character, on the basis of which indicators of damage, defense, agility, and so on are calculated for the entire period of the battle. It also includes an element of chance and the impact on the battle of equipment (armor, melee weapons).
