Reviews for Mondly: Language Learning
While there are some annoying ad pop-ups, I do enjoy this app. It is much easier to learn a new language with the translation help. For example: I am learning Russian and there is an option to see the pronunciation of the words I learn. Very easy, and user friendly app. Better than duolingo. I love it.
Been using Duolingo for years and although I have no intention of stopping, this app is right up there with it, if not better visually and pleasant UI. I think it's going to be a new daily challenge for me. Only issue, and it might be my phones response time, is that I make my choice in any given question and hit complete before my answer fully registers on the screen so it registers as incorrect because the answer is incomplete. When actually it's not. Just too slow to respond to touch.
Could be better. I would love to see more cultural details. Cutlure is a HUGE part of language and vice versa, so it'd be nice if it incorporated more of that. (Example: in Chinese, you learn the characters much quicker when you understand theeaning and significance behind them.) Also, more grammar explanations would be useful.
I was intrigued by the idea of a chat both for practicing speaking, but it very much fails on delivery. You have a pretty standard set of lessons little different than Duolingo, then a "conversation" that consists of the app recording your voice for both sides of a conversation that has absolutely nothing to do with the vocabulary you just learned, way more advanced than you should be at that particular time, and it just records without any sort of judgement on whether you actually pronounced anything right. Add to that the fact that the recorder pretty much dies halfway through, so you're basically just pretending to record your voice through the rest. The chatbot itself is okay. Just seems like it should replace the "conversation" section that doesn't really do any good. The app itself can be pretty buggy. Lost sound completely after a few days and had to completely clear out the cache. Definitely an app that needs work.
The more I use this, the more obvious the flaws are. The interface is bad. Never a good idea for it to be a chore to get from one task to the others. The conversation interface is still a mystery to me despite making it "through" them several times now. The interface to record requires you to wierdly time holding down a button with little feedback. It's too easy to translate based on context cues, since it includes caps and periods and stuff. You can't even see the vocab you've learned anywhere
