Reviews for Fing - Network Tools
I use this app pretty frequently, along with a couple of other network apps I'd consider essential, as an IT service provider. On smaller SMB networks I use it to quickly scan a subnet, identify open ports on a host and launch a (separate) browser/Samba/FTP client to connect to it immediately from the app. Makes quickly finding and logging into the ISP provided router a snap. Also useful to log/monitor changes to a previously scanned network, identify new hosts on the LAN WiFi, add personal notes to scanned networks or discovered devices, quickly gauge network/WiFi security & di!scover open/potentially vulnerable devices. I don't have any experience with the Fingbox tool, but I can see it being a great tool for people who want to know who's using the WiFi & when, control who/what gets internet access & when or just to receive alerts when new/unknown devices show up on your WiFi or network & be able to immediately blacklist them or investigate further.
Backed the Fing team when it was on Kickstarter. Off the ground it was a good project, some things didn't work as expected but app worked well. Fast forward a few years, the team made improvements via upgrades to the app and device, and it is better than ever AWESOME! Fing is one of the better, easier, firewall and network info monitoring devices I've encountered. Love it, wholeheartedly!! Get Fing, app is free, have your networked devices live secured and happy!
Like the app but does not load all devices on the network even though the router's app does (except one device). 3 or 4 don't show no matter how close I am to the device or the router. But, when I go outside in front of the house, then they all show but not with the names that I added inside, show with original names. Weird! Have location allowed.
Used to like this app alot when it was more basic in its functionality/UI. Uninstalled because it just trying to do more than I would like, uses more battery and background recources than it used to. Also started sending me outage notifications, in spanish for some odd reason. I made sure I was set to U.S. and turned off all the options for notifications, emails, and newsletters but the spanish outage notifications still came. I prefer apps that run only when I ask them to. Basic is better IMO.
The UI in landscape mode is unusable. It used to have a really nice UI, but they kept changing it. If they had a way to use the old UI it would be 5 stars. It still finds networked devices, but the UI is so bad, I would call the app 'unusable' overall.
3rd PARTY ADS? Not updating so Fing can cram ads. Everyone knows you need to make money. So add the option for a "pro" or "ad free" version! I'd pay a few bucks for that. If not, when the version I have stops working I'll just delete it. I don't care that Fing thinks they're going to select ads THEY think are relevant to me. Fing trying to be like Apple? (I want a headphone jack. Yeah, no you don't.) And, I don't need a Fing box. My Linksys does fine.
I was going to buy the premium version because I like this app and the ads are annoying. But then I realized you can't buy it. You can only "subscribe" to an auto renewing subscription. Screw that. Uninstalling and finding a replacement that I can pay for ONCE. Goodbye Fing it was good while it lasted. ---------- Update for developer response: I would never "subscribe" to any piece of software. PERIOD. Pay over and over and over No Thanks. It took me all of 10 seconds to find a suitable alternative. It does more than your app does, has been updated and supported for years and better still, because the developer isn't a greedy prick, one payment of $4 and it's yours forever.
