Reviews for BBC: World News & Stories
Love the BBC, but the app still has problems that can make it frustrating to use. Sometimes links to a story lead to another category and not to the story itself, which you have to search for again and again. Getting to the story often takes several attempts, hence the frustration. The videos usually take a long time to load and sometimes don't even play. All that said, I do still use the app because I like the content. I just wish it weren't so clunky. All that should have been fixed by now.
Recent Decline. This is the only way I can describe this app. It was once amazing. Full of articles for good morning reads during breakfast and breaking news alerts almost in real time. Now the app has minimal news stories on most days (typically 1 as of late) for sections such as "World" news. One story for the ENTIRE world? I know they've tried to put in more videos to compensate (of which I prefer to read), but even those are minimal. App was once a great news source now, not so much.
Dropping a few stars. The latest app version isn't stable on Android. After the last update it kept freezing when starting, then timing out and saying it can't access the internet when all other apps access it fine. Now it crashes shortly after it starts. Tried clearing the cache, clearing data, and uninstall / reinstall but that doesn't work around the issue.
Fantastic application that keeps me up-to-date - I start each day by flicking through it. It is picture-rich and works well on a phone. I use the options to E-mail or text stories quite frequently (you can also Tweet etc.). I like the ability to customise news and receive notifications. There is also a widget to let you view the top stories from outside the application. I am an ex-pat and appreciate getting my news from the BBC. (But, since this is UK-based, some videos won't play abroad).
There are many times when they show an AD and there is a big delay only to find out news video isn't available or video just doesn't play at all. I do feel like that I have been cheated when I don't get to see the news video after ADs. I like the News in Videos very much but it doesn't play horizontal mode for some reason. News content in general is pretty good. It's all about stuff instead of fluff.
BBC's news itself is excellent, balanced in its coverage, and includes interesting stories not seen elsewhere. The app functions well, almost never crashes, and most importantly, clearly indicates videos, so I can avoid watching them. I can read faster than a talking head can talk, and I don't want to waste my time on videos. BBC News is the best news app available, in my opinion.
I've loved this app for quite some time, but it's been very unreliable since the most recent update. Selecting BBC notifications on my phone allow me to open up those stories with no problem. But as soon as I visit the front page, the app crashes. This happens whether I navigate to the front page from one of the story notifications, or if I simply launch the app regularly. There aren't many other outlets that post US News with limited bias, and I'm hoping things can be functional again soon.
Well engineered app, and easy to customize, so I get the news that interests me in an attractive format. Unfortunately, ads are getting increasingly obnoxious. They pop up mid-article, disrupting your reading and, lately, even jump you to a loud commercial that you cannot shut off. While we understand the need to pay for the service, how about reverting to a presentation that encourages one to view the ad favorably?
The overall app layout is fine. Customization with content i care about works well. Relatively big annoyance is the text on my MediaPad T5 is gigantic, and the only way to reign it in is to set text on the entire system to its smallest size - which is too small for most other apps. The app needs a way to independently set the desired text size. Can't complain about the content. If you don't like it, choose another news source.
New issue or feature where the story text that is being read disappears leaving only the ad to see. The workaround is to read the entire page top to bottom on your screen the scroll past the ad and repeat. I like to scroll little bits at a time but that isn't an option any more. Update 5/5 - Still the same. Happens on about every other story. I rebuilt my phone for another reason and had to re-install everything and it does the same thing.
